Who knew that Muhammad Ali would have such an impact when he competed in the 1960 Olympics, in Rome. When he took the ring just his presence alone demanded attention. While he is gone, his legacy continues to inspire and change the world today as we discovered on our recent trip to his hometown of Louisville. It is here, where the impact of his charisma can be felt at the Muhammad Ali Center.
Did You Know? Muhammad Ali carried the Olympic torch during the 1996 Opening Ceremonies of the Summer Games in Atlanta, Georgia.
Muhammad Ali is like other’s of his time – including Martin Luther King Jr.; their stories, and the struggles they overcame still have an impact on society today. Throughout the museum you’ll find that there are many presentations and engaging exhibits that take you back in time to relive moments in Muhammad Ali’s life. So, when visiting the Muhammad Ali Center be sure to take your time.
While anytime of the year is good to visit – we picked June because it is the time when Louisville celebrates the life of their hometown hero with the “I Am Ali” Festival. There are so many events and festivities to enjoy around town you may not have time to experience them all. At the heart of each one is the is the celebration of a man who became a “United Nations Messenger of Peace,” and was honored with the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from Amnesty International. Yes, Muhammad Ali received many awards, and achieved a greatness beyond what anyone anticipated when a young Cassius Clay first stepped into the ring. Yet, as you’ll find throughout the Muhammad Ali Center exhibits, he dedicated his life to making a difference in the lives of others.
Muhammad Ali believed in six core principles, which include:
Confidence: Belief in oneself, one’s abilities, and one’s future.
Conviction: The act of devoting all of one’s energy, effort, and abilities to a certain task.
Dedication: The act of devoting all of one’s energy, effort, and abilities to a certain task.
Giving: To present voluntarily without expecting something in return.
Respect: Esteem for, or a sense of the worth or excellence of, oneself and others.
Spirituality: A sense of awe, reverence, and inner peace inspired by a connection to all of creation and/or that which is greater than oneself.
These principles are celebrated and embraced throughout the community during the Festival. And, I think what we’ve enjoyed most during our visit to the Muhammad Ali Center, and while in town is meeting people from everywhere. We see the smiles on their faces as we all celebrate the life of a man who never knew he would mean so much to so many people. It’s been and moving, and uplifting experience, and gives us a chance to help support local programs throughout Louisville as well. And, we almost forgot, there’s also a self-guided Muhammad Ali Footsteps of Greatness Tour, which highlights local landmarks that celebrate “The Greatest,” including the Muhammad Ali Center, the Muhammad Ali Childhood Home, Columbia Auditorium and Cave Hill Cemetery. Pick up the tour brochure at the Louisville Visitor Center (301 S. Fourth St.).

Travel between Indiana and Kentucky across the Ohio River and you may have seen the historic Belle of Louisville Steamboat cruising along the river. If you’ve never taken a cruise along the water between Indiana and Kentucky you’re missing out on a memorable experience. It’s such a peaceful experience to sit back and casually roll along the river, which also makes a ideal romantic surprise for a loved one.

We met many folks just in town for the weekend taking the dinner cruise. Then, there were others who just opted for the cruise its self – we thought is was nice to have the option. We enjoyed chatting with other passengers before dinner. For many, it was their first time on a steamboat as well.
Depending upon when you choice to take your cruise you can either enjoy lunch or dinner. The cruises are also nice for holiday’s like Mother’s and Father’s Day, and special events and celebrations.
The dinner buffet had plenty of choices that included a hearty salad, fresh warms rolls, pasta and a noodle salad, plus tender chicken, and pot roast. Everything was tasty, and you could go back for second’s, or just save room for the delicious brownie’s and other dessert’s offered. It was nice that they also offered snacks like popcorn, and there was a bar to the back in case you wanted a beer or glass of wine.

After dinner, we went upstairs to admire the view and unwind. Throughout the cruise, you’ll hear historic facts about the steamboat. As we listened, Leroy, and I could just imagine what it was like when the boat’s first took to the river. It was a different story back then – these boats moved not only people, but animals and much needed supplies. When this particular steamboat first started in 1914 it was called the Idlewild and built by James Rees and Sons Company out of Pittsburgh, PA. She’s had a long history, and has become a adored tradition by many in Louisville. What’s truly amazing is that at over a century, the Belle of Louisville is a rare beauty cruising the river. In fact, she is listed as a National Historic Landmark, and is the oldest authentic Mississippi-style steamboat in operation in the world!

Did You Know? The Belle of Louisville recently competed in the Great Steamboat Race against the Belle of Cincinnati.
Each year the Belle of Louisville Steamboat and her rival the Belle of Cincinnati compete in the Great Steamboat Race. The competition includes a series of five tasks assigned to each competitor throughout the day and during the race. Each boat is assigned two judges, in addition to an overall event judge from the Derby Festival, which took place in May. The winner of the event will be awarded a set of silver-plated antlers to replace the traditional gilded antlers that were presented to the winner in the past.
The Awards Ceremony takes place immediately following the race at the Chow Wagon in Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront. It was a exciting time for the crew of everyone on the Belle of Cincinnati, who repeated the win from last year. Ahh, but there’s a new challenger awaiting their chance – the American Duchess has challenged the Belle of Cincinnati and Belle of Louisville to compete to the finish in next year’s race. Who will win is anyone’s guess?
The Belle Of Louisville Welcomes A New Addition: The Georgia Belle
Very soon, the Belle of Louisville will offer new opportunities to experience a little bit of history on the Ohio River when they acquire The Georgia Queen. This three-deck vessel with traditional riverboat styling can host 565 passengers, and will replace the Spirit of Jefferson that has served guests and the city of Louisville well. And, this means there are more opportunities to enjoy a wonderful cruise with your family and friends. They also have historical or musical cruises that are very entertaining. Just be sure to plan ahead because the cruises are very popular.

Sato is the first Japanese winner of the Indianapolis 500. He got by Helio Castroneves to take the checkered flag in his No. 26 Andretti Autosport Honda. In fact, this was one among six of the closet races in Indianapolis 500 history.
No two races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are ever the same. There’s a lot that can effect the outcome, including the weather, tires, and unexpected engine troubles. Then there are the crashes like the one early on in the 101st Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil in Turn 2 that take your breath away. It’s intense watching as the cars make contact with each other, and the wall, which is so much safer now. You’re hoping everyone’s okay, and give a sigh of relief when the drivers are able to get out of their cars on their own.
It’s just as nerve wrecking when the drivers get so close and pass to take the lead. There were several lead changes during the race. Early in the month everyone was keeping an eye on the Rookie, Fernando Alonso. In racing, things change in a heart beat, and Fernando Alonso took advantage of an opportunity to take the lead. After the crash he was still in lead position, while it would not last -he did great throughout the race, and took home the Sunoco Rookie of the Year, which earned him a cool $50,000.
There’s a lot more than racing that goes on at IMS – they honored Indianapolis 500 veteran Bryan Clauson, who died following a midget car race last summer. IMS was also able to bring awareness to the need for donors – Clauson was a registered donor, and has healed several people and saved five lives.
IMS also honored Justin Wilson, who died in a race accident in 2015. The Wilson’s first Champ Car race-winning chassis has been completed, and is to be auctioned off with all proceeds will be donated to the Wilson’s Children Fund www.wilsonchildrensfund.com.
The Indiana Donor Network and IMS have united to register donors with their Driven2SaveLives campaign. Please visit #BCForever #Driven2SaveLives to learn more and become a registered donor.
As you walk around the track we saw everyone enjoying the race. From meeting drivers, to touring the garage, or taking a break for a bite to eat; IMS is about sharing the moment. And, it’s the memories we share with our family and friends that last, and keep us coming back year after year!
