Sarah had lost her daughter, and then her husband to TB a few year’s later, then made the bold move from New Haven, Ct on the East Coast to San Jose, California. Once settled on the West Coast, she settled into her home and construction began and would not stop until her death on the 5th of September 1922. So, from 1886 until the fall of 1922 the work continued, as did the rumors are many surrounding the extensive construction on the house.
The stories I heard as a child were like many of the fantastic rumors surrounding the Winchester Mystery House. One such rumor mentioned she continued to build and build upon the property to appease those killed by the weapons her husband’s family forged. Regardless, the house is stunning, and one of California’s treasured gem’s. In fact, the Winchester Mystery House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a California Historic State Landmark, a San Jose City Landmark, and is one of the leading attractions in the Bay Area.
There are also wonderful Mother’s Day festivities. Surprise Mom with a trip along the California coast to San Jose, where she’ll enjoy Brunch in the beautiful Victorian Garden with mimosas. Afterwards, you and Mom can take a 65 minute tour of the Winchester Mystery House.
For those seeking a sampling of the paranormal step back in time at the Winchester Mystery House and join the Illusions of the Passed: A Theatrical Seance With Aiden Sinclair. Master Magician, Aiden Sinclair will present an exclusive evening of entertainment with a Victorian Seance. It will be a memorable moment for all – although not suggested for those under the age of 10.
